If you have unattractive, enlarged blue or
purple veins on the thigh or calf you may be suffering from varicose veins. Varicose veins is a
frequently occurring condition with uo to 10-15% of men & women getting affected with symptoms
of fatigue, pain and swelling of the lower limbs.
Varicose vein is
probably related to an
inherited weakness in the veins' wall or the valves that prevent blood from flowing backwards.
When these valves do not close or fail to function properly, then the blood flows downward i.e.
in the opposite direction into the leg/foot Gradually excess deoxygenated blood collects at the
ankle leading to venous hypertension. This extra blood causes tortuosity & dilatation of vein
which is diagnosed as varicose vein. This deoxygenated blood causes Metabolic changes in the
skin of the affected area leading to hyperpigmentation of skin, eczema type presentation,
ulceration & pedal oedema.
In the initial stages varicose vein may appear
However the primary symptom of varicose vein is prominent bulging veins in the leg or fine
reticular vein/telangiectasia in foot or thigh.
Common complaints are:
1.Oedema 2.Pain 3.Tired
4.Leg 5.Itching Burning Pain
6.Night Cramps 7.Ulceration 8.Hyperpigmentation
This is a minimally invasive procedure to treat
The procedure involves thermal ablation of varicose vein intraluminally. During the
procedure a laser fibre is inserted inside the vein, once inside the laser fibre is fired,
producing heat thus ablating the vein. Following which the vein contracts. The procedure is
performed under local anaesthesia or with sedation. Patients are able to walk after a few
hours & generally return to normal activity within a couple of days.
